A Temple Not Built by a King

Banteay Srei was founded by Yajnavaraha, a brahmin counsellor and royal tutor. Its scale is domestic — doorways barely 1.3 metres high — yet the carving quality suggests specialist ateliers working with quartz-hard sandstone and metal tools.
