Roneat ek and roneat thung (xylophones), kong vong toch and thom (gong circles), sralai (quadruple-reed oboe), sampho and skor thom (drums), and chhing (finger cymbals) which hold the colotomic cycle. Nothing in the ensemble plays a chord; each line paraphrases a single skeletal melody at its own density — a heterophony rather than harmony.

Survival

An estimated 80–90% of Cambodia's professional musicians died between 1975 and 1979. The Pinpeat repertoire survives because a handful of masters reconstructed it from memory in the 1980s, teaching orally in refugee camps and reopened conservatories.
